Design library

Explore the design library of Diolkos. The library includes properly selected design projects studied using Diolkos software. The user can refer to the sample studies included in the library in order to understand  how various design cases can be manipulated using Diolkos.

Note that handling a project in a specific way is for the purposes of illustration. The user is free to use another way to meet the same result for the following design cases. 

Design samples




1. Divided highway (total length 12024 meters) with  two seperated lanes per direction and 'New Jersey' in the middle. The width of the traveled way is 7.2 m for each direction. The thickness of the asphalt layer is 0.09  m  and the thickness of the  pavement base layer is 0.20 m. Finally the road pavement has a drainage layer with minimum thickness 0.2 m.

2. River arrangement project. Total length 2947 m. Protection in curves with gabion walls (serasanetti).

3. The moto-cross race circuit of the international six days enduro 2008 race (ISDE 2008). Length of the circuit 1762 m. Pavement thickness 0,40 m.

4. River delineation project. Total length 1709 m. (In order to overview the riverbed you should check the 'Zoom in the ground limits' option in the 'View->Layers' form of the cross section window.

5. Highway with two service roads.

6. Interchange in a highway with double 'New Jersey' in the middle (width 2,60 m). The highway is intersected with a road which have the width of the traveled way equal with 6,50 m and the shoulders width equal with 1,0 m. Free flow ramps entering and exiting from cross-road with acceleration and deceleration lanes. The ramps are adapted to the cross road with simple plain 'T' intersections.

7. Road with bicycle facilities. For the road, the width of the traveled way is 8,0 m and the width of island between the road and the bicycle facility is 1,75-1,50. The shoulders have widths 1,0 m for the road and 0,5 for the bicycle facility. The pavement of the road has asphalt layers with total thickness 10 cm and two base layers with 10 cm thickness each one.

9. Road improvement (total length 5927 m). The width of the traveled way is 6,0 m and width of the shoulders is  1,0 m. The pavement has: one asphalt layer with thickness 5 cm, one base and one subbase layer with 10 cm thickness each one. The edges of the pavement layers on the left and right side are shaped vertical.

10. Mountainous road (total length 7592 m) improvement of an existing forest road. The new road has: width of the traveled way 6,5 m and shoulders with 1,0 m width. The pavement has: two asphalt layers with thickness 5 cm each one, two base and two subbase layers with 10 cm thickness each layer. The side-slopes grade varies  depending on the quality of ground. The road is wider on the curves according to widenings diagram.

11. Mountainous road (total length 6589 m), improvement of an existing forest road. The new road has: width of the traveled way 7,0 m and shoulders with 0,5 m width. The pavement has: two asphalt layers with thickness 5 cm each one, one base and one subbase layer with 10 cm thickness each layer. The road has constant width along the axis. The study includes also 11 culverts used to pass crossing streams or to evacuate lateral ditches in cuts.

12. Road with total length 6817 m has:  width of the traveled way 9,0 m and shoulders with 1,5 m width. The pavement has: two asphalt layers with thickness 5 cm each one, two base and two subbase layers with 10 cm thickness each layer.

13. Multiple design project including: an improvement of a rural road (with an asphalt layer) and two small irrigation channels from both sides. The pavement has: one asphalt layer with thickness 5 cm, one base and one subbase layer with 10 cm thickness each layer. The project includes three irrigation channels along the road axis, two with orthogonal sections and one with trapezoidal.

14. Widening of an urban street and curb construction from both sides.

15. Improvement with asphalt layer of an old urban street having variable pavement thickness. The old pavement is a rigid pavement which was constructed with concrete. The total thickness of the asphalt layer is 9 cm  and it should be adapted in the superalavation of the existing road.

16. Study of a gravelled rural road with length 1347 m and width 5,40 m. The pavement thickness is 20 cm and under its foundation a ground improvement layer having 40 cm thickness should be constructed.

17. Study of an urban road with length 310 m and width 6,00 m. The pavement has: one asphalt layer with thickness 5 cm, two base and one subbase layer with 10 cm thickness each layer. The typical cross sections of the design include triangular drain gutter on the right and left side of the deck.

18. Design of a candidate driver circuit. The width of deck varies along the axis.
The pavement has: two asphalt layers with thickness 5 cm each one and two base layers with 10 cm thickness each layer. In the two sides of deck the road has waysides and kurbs.

19. River arrangement in an urban area (length 1121 m). The water supply is taken by a rectangle open pipe. The  pipe will be constructed by concrete and its cross section has dimensions 3,6X1,0 m. The excavation refill quantities is separated in two parts. The lower part is consisted by gravel material and the upper part by plant material

20. River arrangement in an urban area (length 678 m). The initial geometry of the arrangement and the side-slopes protection will be achieved by gabions.
